In Language Arts we read chapter 9 of Ticket to Curlew. We learned that the Ferrier kids were all having a challenging time riding their horse Prince. They also went to school and Sam was the only student "in fifth reader", which meant that everyone one else was younger than him, and he had to help with classroom jobs. After Sam helped all the kids get into their buggies and onto their horses, Prince was being a 'total savage' and was not letting him get on so he bribed him with some cookies.
We learned how to answer comprehension questions with detailed 4-5 sentence paragraphs. First we had to rephrase the question, then we had to get evidence from the book and finally we could add a connection, prediction and/or definition.
In Social Studies, we started our Homestead challenge. We will try to build a homestead that will be prosperous during seasonal changes and environmental challenges.
We also learned about what 160 acres looks like. This number is important because it was the amount of land a settler would get when they came to Canada. The pictures below show two examples of how big 160 acres is. We estimate that about 6-8 Saddledomes or 15-20 Panorama Hills Schools could fit in 160 acres!
In Science we finished our simple machine cars, and raced them for the final time. Next week we will finish our self-assessment and reflection.
In Math, we have been doing the Standard Algorithm. First you put the bigger number on top of the smaller number. Then multiply the digits on top starting with the ones, tens and hundreds. You need to regroup your number if it is a 2 digit number. You put the number in the ones place under the equals sign and carry the number in the tens place to the next number.
Here are a couple of videos that break down how it works:
This week we played the math game 4x4. If you get the same number beside each other (to the side, or up or down) you multiply them, and then you add all the products to find the total. The goal is to have the largest total.
We also created a t-chart with 1 column titled "In my Head" and the other column titled "Use a Strategy". We had to pick numbers from the circles and decide if you could do the equation in your head or if you needed a strategy.
Next week in math we will be applying our multiplication strategies to solve word problems. We will once again use the C.U.B.E.S. strategy to help us with math word problems.
C - Circle key numbers
U - Underline the question
B - Box any math words
E - Equation with equals sign
S - Solve and check
