This week has been historic!

In Social Studies and Language Arts we finished Chapter 15, 16 and 17 of Ticket to Curlew. We also visited Heritage Park on Wednesday, where we learned a few things:

  • A hundred years ago you could rent a house from the post office.
  • The post office was the only place you could make a phone call.
  • We observed a few paper bags hanging from some of the buildings, which were used to keep wasps away.
  • We visited Sam Livingston's house, which he lived in with his wife and 14 children.
  • The currency that fur traders used was called "Made Beaver".
  • Animal skins being used as carpets and bedsheets in the houses at Heritage Park.
  • At the printing press, we saw how newspapers were made with hot metal sticks that had letters on the ends, which were pressed onto the paper.

Here are a few pictures of our day:

In Science we made a pamphlet about the four parts of a plant: the roots, the stem, the flower and the leaves. We also dissected a seed, to see the main parts of the seed, which are: the cotyledon, the embryo and the seed coat.

We also completed the Tomatosphere program, where we planted two groups of tomato seeds, one from an outer space environment and one from an earth environment. We discovered that space seeds are less likely to germinate, as more earth seeds germinated than space seeds. Our space seeds grew considerably better than other classes' space seeds in Canada.

In art we made clay pots for our tomato plants. We put a hole at the bottom of the pot so the water drains out and doesn't drown our plant.

This week, Sophina and Paulina presented their passion project about graffiti. We learned that some people get hired to do graffiti in public places.

Samantha and Kaitlynn also presented their passion project about Disney. We learned that Walt Disney died in 1966 from complications due to lung cancer.

Harveen also presented her passion project about seals. We learned that certain seals actually eat other seals!

Edward also presented his passion project about iPads. We learned that Apple makes several different versions of the iPad.

Kennedy and Trista also presented their passion project about manatees. We learned that they can weight up to 1400 pounds.

Edwin presented his passion project about the Apple Company. We learned that the Apple Company is 43 years old!
