This week has been warmer than last week!

In math we learned a new strategy for addition called "give and take". This is when you add two numbers together, and add another number to make one of the numbers a "friendly number" (which makes it easier to add to), then you subtract the same number that you added. 

In science we watched Bill Nye and learned about a few simple machines like levers, pulleys, screws, inclined planes and the wheel and axle. 

In social studies we did some partner research about our Albertan roots. 

In language arts we did our dictation and marked them ourselves! We also said goodbye to Cathy, she helped us with our First Nation perspective paragraphs. 

In music we just started practicing with our recorders. 

Our spelling pattern next week: 

The letters ie and ei can be vowel pairs or digraphs. They are vowel pairs in pies and seize, brief and sleigh.

Use this rhyme to spell words with ie and ei:

I before E

Except after C

Or when sounded as A

Reminders:

• We will be constructing playground parks for our simple machine unit, so please start collecting items (at home) to use for the project such as, popsicle sticks, cardboard, straws, bottle caps, string, cardstock, pipecleaner, rubber bands, plastic lids/containers, tinfoil, thimbles, buttons, toothpicks, putty, etc. 
• Please return your form for our Human Sexuality unit ASAP
• February 27th is Pink Shirt Day
• There is no school next week on Friday, March 1st

This week has been excellent AND short, itsy bitsy, tiny, and quick! 

In math we did a math maze that we had to add up to 100 by using numbers in a maze. We had to use a lot of thinking to solve the maze. 

In science we reviewed our science test. 

In social we researched questions about Alberta and the fur trade. 

In language arts we gave feedback on our cat/rat perspective writing. We also wrote in a four frame about the most emotionally moment in our First Nation's characters' life. 

In health we watched a class dojo which talked about "the dip". The "dip" is when you try to do something, but get frustrated and want to give up. We started to learn about strategies to get through the dip. 

In art we made envelopes for Valentine's cards. 

Our spelling pattern this week will be: 

In vowel pairs, two vowels come together to make one long vowel sound. The second vowel is silent.
In vowel diagraphs, 2 vowels come together to make a vowel sound that can be long or short.

This week has been splendid, but it has also been... freezing, frigid, chilly, breezy, and frozen!

In math we have been subtracting using the Open Number Line strategy. 

In science we, had a mad scientist come and show us how simple machines work. We also finished up our lights and shadows unit. 

In social we got into our First Nation Groups and did our presentations. Cathy Beveridge came to our class and taught us how to write a poem about a First Nations child character our age. 

In language arts we wrote about a cat or a rat's perspective from a picture of a cat looking at a rat in his hole, and we also wrote this blog together!

In health we read a book about bullies. 

Our spelling pattern this week will be the same this week, as we were very busy with very little time to practice!

• Scholastic orders are due on February 13th 
• Valentine's Day card exchange is scheduled on February 13th and Ms. Costello will send out students' first names in an email
• No school on Thursday and Friday next week
• Please return your report card envelopes if you have not already done so
